Beckie Renée Souza

Professional Fine Artist & Illustrator

Hello and welcome!

I'm a self-taught professional fine artist and illustrator based in the Southeastern United States. I create artwork using many different traditional mediums like watercolor, pastel, ink, acrylic, gouache, graphite, and much more. I have a wide-ranging style from illustrative to impressionistic to realistic.

You'll find pencils, pens, palette knives and dip pens in my art studio, and you'll often see me using my fingers to apply acrylic paint to the canvas. I'm fascinated with creating impressionistic seascapes, textural acrylic paintings, unique illustrative watercolor florals, realistic wildlife and pet portraits, and more, with texture, layers and lots of color. All of my paintings and drawings are original designs.

I use a wide variety of art supply brands, and I write professional, unbiased art product reviews.

Watercolors, Inks & Gouache

Original Illustrative Designs

All things watercolor, ink & gouache. I use a combination of watercolor pans, tubes and pencils, as well as gouache, inks and dip pens, ink pencils & ink pens.

Watercolors are my go-to medium for my illustrative work and when I travel. I have a growing series of original designed, illustrated, impressonistic florals. I use all archival watercolor paper in all textures cold pressed, hot pressed and rough), and I typically work in sizes 8"x10" and under. I am a new member of the National Watercolor Society, Southern Watercolor Society, and Florida Watercolor Society.

Pastels

Realistic Wildlife & Pets

All things pastel. I use a variety of pastels, including soft pastels, hard pastels, pastel cakes, and pastel pencils. My wildlife and pet portraits are primarly rendered using pastels. I like the texture and blendability that pastels offer for fur and feathers.

My pastel work is done on sanded paper ranging in size from 5"x7" to 11"x14". Above is a work-in-progress of a caracal in pastels on 9"x12" Pastelmat® sanded paper. I work in many, many layers, slowly building up the texture. I fold the edge of the foil that you see on my easel closest to you to catch the pastel dust that falls when being applied to the paper.

Acrylics

Original Designs

All things acrylic. I use acrylics, heavy body acrylics, acrylic inks, and texture mediums like gloss and matte gel, course ground sand, and glass beads to create my original designed acrylic paintings. In addition to traditional paint brushes, I particularly enjoy using palette knives and my fingers to create texture in my acrylic paintings. I work on pre-stretched, archival canvases ranging in size from 3"x5" up to 24"x36" and occasionally larger. My go-to canvas size is 16"x20" - large enough for lots of texture detail, yet reasonably fits on small room walls in sets.
